Perth summers are long and hot, and dogs feel the heat far more than we do. They cannot cool themselves as easily as we can, so heat is a genuine risk. A few simple habits keep your dog comfortable and safe through the hottest months.
Walk in the cool of the day
Walk early in the morning or later in the evening, and skip the middle of the day altogether when it is hot. Always do the pavement test: press the back of your hand to the footpath for seven seconds. If it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for their paws, hot bitumen can burn pads badly.
Water and shade, always
Make sure your dog has constant access to fresh, cool water and shade, especially if they are outside. On very hot days, a paddling pool, a damp towel to lie on, or a few ice cubes in the water bowl all help them cool down.
Never leave a dog in a parked car
This one is non-negotiable. On a warm day the inside of a car heats to dangerous levels within minutes, even with the windows cracked and even in the shade. It is never worth the risk, not even for a quick errand.
Know the signs of heatstroke
Heatstroke is an emergency. Watch for:
- Heavy, frantic panting
- Drooling and bright red gums
- Weakness, wobbliness or collapse
- Vomiting or diarrhoea
If you suspect heatstroke, move your dog to a cool place, offer small sips of water, wet them with cool but not icy water, and contact your vet immediately.
Don't shave a double coat
It is tempting, but shaving a fluffy double-coated dog to cool them down usually backfires, that coat is part of their cooling system and sun protection. A professional deshed removes the heat-trapping undercoat without the risks. Here is why.
Keep them comfortable
A little planning goes a long way in a Perth summer. Cooler walks, plenty of water and shade, never a hot car, and a well-maintained coat will keep your dog happy right through to autumn.
