Is doggy daycare a good idea for my Staffy?

Solid, silly and devoted to everyone they meet. Here's how Staffies go in a playroom.

For most Staffies, yes: daycare suits them well. Staffordshire Bull Terriers are sociable, people-loving and full of energy, and a supervised day burns that off safely. The thing to manage is enthusiasm and strength, which is why the right playgroup and a proper first-day assessment matter more than the breed label.

What are Staffies like in a playroom?

Joyful, physical and a little over the top. Staffies are famously people-oriented, and many greet staff with the same full-body wriggle they give their own family. With other dogs they tend to play hard: lots of wrestling, bouncing and body-slamming, usually with a big open-mouth grin. That's often exactly what they want, and the right playmates will give it back. The same strength and stamina that make a Staffy such fun can be a lot for a gentler or smaller dog, so enthusiasm is the thing the team watches most. As with any breed, individual dogs vary a great deal, and we assess the dog in front of us rather than the stereotype.

How do you match a Staffy with the right playgroup?

By size, energy and play style, never by breed alone. A confident, bouncy Staffy often does best with dogs who match their pace and enjoy the same rough-and-tumble, and less well with a timid dog who finds that style overwhelming. Our daycare groups dogs deliberately, and supervised play includes rest breaks so that excitement doesn't stack up through the day. If a Staffy is getting wound up, the team steps in early with a pause, a change of activity or a move to a calmer space, rather than waiting for things to escalate.

Does a Staffy need a lot of exercise?

A fair amount, yes. They are a muscular, energetic breed that was built to work, and a bored Staffy has plenty of ways to make their own entertainment, usually involving your furniture. A day of play, sniffing and company at daycare is a good outlet, and on days they attend most owners notice a calmer evening. It isn't a replacement for walks, training and time with you, but it takes a lot of pressure off the rest of the week. If you're seeing destructive habits at home, our post on whether boredom is behind a destructive dog goes through it.

What about heat and cold in Perth?

A Staffy's short, smooth coat gives little insulation or sun protection, and Perth summers regularly reach the high thirties between December and February. Our play areas are fully indoor and air conditioned, water is always available and rest is built into the day, so heat is handled for them. At home, keep walks to the cooler parts of the day and watch for heavy panting. Pale or pink skin can burn, so check with your vet about sun protection for light-coloured dogs. In our cooler months many short-coated dogs also feel a chilly morning, which is worth remembering for early drop-offs.

What should you know before their first day?

Every new dog starts with a free evaluation day, which is a normal day where we get to know your dog and settle them into a suitable group. They'll need a current C5 vaccination and to be desexed if they're over six months old. Tell us what shapes their day: how they greet other dogs, whether they guard toys or food, and any history that matters. If your Staffy has had a difficult experience with other dogs, say so, and we'll plan around it. A short-coated breed still sheds and still needs a bath and nail trim, and because the Jandakot salon is on the same site, many daycare dogs get theirs done while they're there.

Frequently asked questions

Are Staffies good with other dogs at daycare?

Many are, and many love it. Dogs vary, and some Staffies are choosier about playmates. That's why a free evaluation day comes first, so we can see how your dog behaves and match them to the right group.

Will my Staffy be put in a group with big, rough dogs?

Only if it suits them. Groups are matched by size, energy and play style, so a Staffy plays with dogs who enjoy the same style, and a gentler dog isn't expected to cope with a bouncy one.

Do Staffies get too hot at daycare?

Our play areas are fully indoor and air conditioned, with water always available and rest built into the day. If your dog ever pants heavily or seems unwell at home, see your vet.

What does my Staffy need before starting daycare?

A current C5 vaccination, desexing if they're over six months old, and an evaluation day for their first visit, which is free.

Think your Staffy would love it?

Book their free evaluation day at Jandakot and find out.
